Jewry Wall - A Real Roman Experience
Leicesters Jewry Wall Museum a much loved part of the cities portfolio of museums has, like a certain timelord in a blue police box, undergone a substantial regeneration turning it into a museum fit to tell the story of the Roman foundations of Leicester or as they knew it Ratae Corieltauvorum.
At Jewry Wall - a real Roman experience, you can immerse yourself in the stories of Roman Leicester through a multi-media exhibition at the Roman bathhouse ruins.
I was invited to take a look at the new exhibition and find out just what this exiting addition to the Leicester museums portfolio has to offer visitors at a launch event a few days before the general opening.
Starting at the entrance on St Nicolas circle we walk up the newly created entrance bridge and into the exhibition with the spectacular bathhouse ruins on our right.
The experience begins with an immersive story in which we follow a young boy and his dog as they travel around the roman city and meet various residents.
We are then invited to continue our adventure downstairs in the main gallery where we are met by the first of a number of showstopping mosaics found locally, the exhibition continues telling the day to day stories of Ratae and its people, how they lived, worked and entertained themselves through interactive panels and activities bringing the past to life.
At the far end of the exhibition we see the spectacular peacock mosaic and further intricate designs found just up the road on the site of the Stibbe factory, see my previous film on this channel https://youtu.be/P1wPOOiYlw0?si=Tl4u0tUZxHD8OUVW .
Next we head outside to see the bath house ruins themselves an oasis of calm as as a modern Leicester evening busily carries on around it.
We end our visit with original music performed on a ancient Lyre by .
Tickets are available to purchase in advance of your visit at www.jewrywall.com and it comes highly Ratae`d by myself.
