Christmas Lights Switch On Leicester

The festive season gets off to a spectacular start in Leicester with the annual light switch on. We start the evening at Jubilee Square where the giant wheel of light shines over the city sparkling with bright white light and patterns across it's spokes and circumference. Moving along High Street and outside Urban Outfitters is the Snow Queen in her snow globe. As we pass a beautifully decorated tree we find ourselves at the Town Hall Square fountain where, illuminated by bright colours, there`s Christmas magic already in the air, soon we see a gentle giant blue bear and baby exploring the space and giving the camera a sniff. Next up a very tall pink Christmas fairy has come down from the top of the tree to say hello. We go traditional next with a performance from the  @LeicesterCathedral  Choir performing Once In Royal David`s City as the lights are switched on the well known " Christmas Greetings " words, a regular part of the cities Town Hall decorations f...

Clock Tower Conga VE Day 80

On the 8th May 1945 Victory was declared in Europe and fighting ceased the day was known as VE Day. In Leicester crowds gathered around the clock tower and formed a Conga Line the moment was captured in a well known image. The Syston Knitting Banksy (SKB) known for her topical postbox toppers in Syston has 80 years later recreated the scene in wool with all details intact. In my film we take a look at the piece on #veday #VEDay80

Light Up Leicester - Performances

In the second of my films from Light Up Leicester I take a look at the various performances that accompanied the Installations around the city. We start with Aquanauts Adrift on Jubilee Square complementing the bubble like structures of Evanescent by Atelier Sisu, this performance piece by  @enteredem5879  features two Aquanauts on a mission to bring the wonders of the underwater world to the audience, with lots of fun bubbles and characters along for the ride. Next we arrive at the Clock Tower where  @NupurArtsDance  bring us the bight colours, dance and spectacle of the Holi Experience, ending with a blast of colour from bright powder thrown into the air. To the  @LeicesterMuseums  on New Walk next for the surreal but magical spectacle of FIERS À CHEVAL, Featuring imposing illuminated ivory horses, light and flamboyant. What follows is a magical experience along the New Walk led by performers from Compagnie Des Quidams, as they journey to The Circl...

Light Up Leicester - Installations

From 12-15 March, Leicester’s city centre came alive with light installations, projections and performances. The free festival celebrates community, creativity, and connection, transforming the streets into a glowing celebration of art and culture. Join me as I explore the artworks, performances, etc taking place across the city from Highcross to Jubilee Square, From the Cathedral to The Clock Tower and beyond it`s time to Light Up Leicester. Light Up Leicester is presented by Leicester City Council, BID Leicester, Leicester Cathedral and Art Reach. It is made possible through the generous support of Arts Council England, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Global Streets, PPL PRS and headline sponsor Highcross.

Leicester Christmas Lights Switch On 2024

As the festive season approaches faster than the Polar Express at full speed the annual switching on of the Leicester Christmas Lights takes place at various locations around the city. We begin the evening on High Street where we meet the Nutcracker Marching band, we`ll meet them again several times over the evening but for now we follow them to the clock tower which is already illuminated by lasers and patterns projected from the Haymarket balcony where BBC Radio Leicesters Ady Dayman and cast from De Montfort Halls Pantomime are getting the crowds ready for the big moment. Past the Christmas food market and we find an eccentric fellow with his Pramdemonium a strange contraption with trumpets and bubbles playing organ music to entertain the crowds. On to Town Hall Square now where illuminations and moving lights give the area a magical quality, we see two stilt walking angels towering over us, illuminated and performing graceful movements as they move through the crowd. Soon from ac...
