Luxmuralis at Leicester Cathedral

I take a look at Space by Luxmuralis at Leicester Cathedral. Having previously witnessed Luxmuralis work at Lichfield Cathedral I was exited to see what the artists would create at Leicester Cathedral with its similar architecture but ultimately quite different layout and size. I attended the 8pm showing after attending the Leicester Christmas Lights Switch on (see previous film) on an icy cold 20th November. The Windows of the cathedral were illuminated in various colours as I approached, with the show on a loop the grand soundtrack by David Harper could be heard as I entered the building. Following a route around the interior of this familiar place transformed by Peter Walker and his team with light and projections, I turned right to see King Richard III`s final resting place like never before, illuminated in blue and pink light an ethereal atmosphere was created and with a projection portraying the passage of time projected onto the cathedral wall in front of the Kings tomb, a very special "Leicester Moment" seemed to be unfolding in front of me in this sacred location. Continuing on the route the moon landings and JFK`s famous "we chooses to go to the moon" speech is heard as the arches of the cathedral and various carvings etc catch the light transformed by projections of space, scientific symbols and other patterns fill the space. As I enter the main area of the cathedral with its high ceiling the finale of twisting shapes and colours dance around the walls and the music builds to a crescendo my home city cathedral transformed and seen anew. from leicestercathedral.org/space Space asks us to think about what humans have achieved, and our place in the world, while experiencing Leicester Cathedral like never before. Visitors will be wander through projections of galaxies, a rocket launch, and the universe beyond, all with immersive soundscapes. Francesca Pellegrino, the Cathedral's Head of Visitor Experience, said: "It is very exciting to host this amazing event in the newly renovated Cathedral. The installation is set to transform the building in a beautiful way, creating a truly memorable experience for all.". Created by the artistic collaboration Luxmuralis, their works have been touring cathedrals and other locations in the UK for several years. At the heart of their productions is the exploration of the development of the fine art tradition through new media whilst using buildings of historical significance as a canvas.
