Sanctuary by David Best

Built to Burn. Designed to Heal. Sanctuary, A Memorial for the Nation is (was) an artwork situated in the town of Bedworth and created by American artist David Best. The piece is designed to act as a temporary structure and memorial to those lost during the last few years, the intricate wooden structure is created in collaboration with the local community and offers opportunities to develop carpentry skills and more. Artist David Best is known for his 'Temples' at Burning Man Festival in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, his vision is for the work is for it to be a healing space for everyone to come together after a challenging two years. Produced by Artichoke, in association with Imagineer and supported by Nuneaton And Bedworth Borough Council, Warwickshire County Council and DCMS Culture Recovery Fund, Sanctuary is located in Miners Welfare Park in the heart of Bedworth. My film takes a look around and inside the work taking in the spectacular cut wood and cathedral-like interior with the sun shining through the intricate panels. We also hear from David Best himself on why he chose the area for the work. As with much of David's work the structure will be burned to the ground on Saturday 28th May to help signal a rebirth.
