Menphys Walk Poster 2012

I was asked to design a poster for the Menphys walk an annual charity walk taking place on 13th may 2012 in Leicestershire.

Taking its cues from last years poster for the 30th walk (also designed by me !) it features an refinement of that years footprint idea giving the poster a 'walked on' look.

This motif has been continued onto all associated media for the event including banners and sponsor forms as well as any merchandise such as stickers, water bottles etc.

The poster uses the charity's colour scheme of Red Grey & Black & utilizes the Teen typeface to allow the poster to make it easy to read but also portray a fun and playful personality,

The Teen typeface is teamed up with Earwig Factory evoking memories of children`s A is for apple type alphabet posters.

The Poster additionally features a QR code to allow interested persons to scan the code with their smartphone triggering a free download of a registration form for the walk creating an increased likelihood that the person will take part in the event.

Curry Evening Poster Design

Poster design for Leicester charity Menphys Curry Evening fundraising event.Taking its cues from the intricate patterns of henna this poster uses hot spicy colours such as fiery reds and deep yellow to evoke the spices and flavours used in Indian cuisine,
The event will raise funds for both Menphys and Age Concern.
I was also tasked with designing some tickets for the event you can see them by clicking read more bellow.

London Fireworks 2012 New Years Eve - From Hyde Park

Happy New Year !,
In My First post of 2012 I offer you an alternative view of the New Years Eve London Firework display from the banks of the Serpentine in Hyde Park London from December 2011 - January 1st 2012, marking the start of 2012 and the year London hosts the Olympic Games.
We left for London at 9pm on 31st December and wouldn't be back till 2012 !.
After driving around central London scouting potential locations we settled on Hyde Park and the banks of of the serpentine giving a unique perspective on the nights proceedings.
As 12 o'clock approached and the last few minutes of 2011 became history the low level cloud was illuminated by a light show emanating from the London eye, we watched the seconds count down, then on the stroke of midnight and with a roar of approval from the now crowded serpentine bridge, the sky erupted in a display of colours with nods toward the Olympic rings and accompanied by a sound track of oooos and ahhhs !.

Christmas at Covent Garden

Christmas at Covent Garden was filmed on 18th December 2011 at London's Covent Garden Market.The Market had been decked with giant baubles and mirror balls that threw snow like points of light around the historic buildings arches and upon the crowds who where taking in the festive atmosphere.Outside the main market area stood a giant topiary reindeer and Christmas tree with a large red bow tied around its wooden base, these festive icons where accompanied by the hustle of visitors taking in the performances of the multitude of street performers the area is famous for.A unique aroma of deep yellow Paella and sweet Chestnuts roasting on an open fire filled our senses in the second hall whist an opera singer serenaded a gathering crowd.The famous Apple market selling (despite its name) sold an eclectic selection of craft items from photographs of typical English scenes to the usual London bus tourist souvenirs.Using the map on my phone we took a brief diversion around the nearby theatre district and down to the river Thames and the south bank but that story is for another post (coming soon !).

The Great Leicester Santa Run is held every year in Victoria park Leicester and raises funds for the when you wish upon a star foundation.
The event sees hundreds of people dressed as Santa complete a course around the park and has been taking place for several years.
My video features all the action from the start of the race which was signalled by Leicester City Legend Steve Walsh, footage of the race itself and concludes with the local policeman for Victoria park handing out the medals at the end.

Helicopter Delivers L.C.F.C Matchball

As part of Leicester City's annual remembrance day fixture, it has become tradition for the games match ball to be delivered to the ground by helicopter whilst veterans and serving soldiers line the edge of the pitch.This video (shot an a smart phone) shows the approach, landing and departure of the helicopter as well as the presentation of the match ball to the officials.the presentation was followed by a silence and the players wore poppy's embroidered on their playing shirts.

Whilst filming on the shoreline at Rutland water I came across a strange sight, a plastic eyeball staring back at me !,Its owner long gone and its usefulness passed, it lay abandoned in the stones and sand forever to stare at the sky above.

Wild Deer Of Bradgate Park Leicestershire

I woke up at 6:30am and set off to Bradgate Park in Leicestershire, a former Medieval Deer Park, first enclosed as a hunting park over 750 years ago and home to a large herd of wild deer that I planned to capture on film.
As the sun rose over the parkland the deep sounds of the male deer calling out could be heard though the crisp morning air, the cool palette of blues and whites gave way to deep oranges as the majestic animals made their presence known.
An army of photographers marched through the ferns like an episode of Dads Army, their large lenses draped in various forms of camouflage.
I decided to go the opposite way and came across a lone stag hunting for his breakfast in amongst the plant life backlit by the rising sun.
The video above shows the deer calling out to each other across the parkland bathed in the early morning sunlight.

The Silver Screen Beckons At The Short Cinema Festival

The festival started life at the Criterion Pub and tonight marks its first migration to Phoenix Square.
My nerves rise as the lights go down, what will they think of my film ?, how will it look on such a big screen ?, I wonder if this is how the big Hollywood directors feel at the big Leicester square events !.
A few minutes in and There's been an eclectic mix of films so far, A film about a ticket collector featuring a person dressed as a polar bear and a fantastic film by Ben Jacobson called Air Mail precede mine and then it begins, the screen s mine for 2:21, my fears of the picture quality quickly dissipate as the beat box soundtrack blasts out from the speakers "Interesting idea" I hear someone say from the row in front of me.
My film ends and is followed by Summer Ice a film about a Lady down on her luck and a number of other shorts form various filmmakers all tied together by a comedic take on the history of cinema.
The night ends with an interesting take on Mr Cameroon`s big society idea and as the lights come back on I exit the cinema amazed by the fantastic array of local filmmaking talent on show this evening.

Menphys QR Code Campaign

I recently started a unique marketing campaign for Leicester charity Menphys.

A poster featuring a large QR code has been placed in the window of their fundraising office, when this code is scanned (with a compatible smart phone) it directs the person to the charity's official website detailing the charity's work.

The window faces Narborough road a main route into the centre of Leicester making the chance of interaction with the QR code by pedestrians very high,

The code also has the potential to greatly raise the profile of the charity in the community it serves & means a substantially increased chance of the person becoming an active fundraiser for the charity.

The next step in this campaign will see the QR codes being extended across more of the charity's various media outputs providing a quick and easy way for interested people to find more information on an event or even donate directly to the charity though sms.

A Decade of Sculpture In The Garden

This video filmed by me features the annual Sculpture In The Garden exhibition at the University of Leicester Botanical gardens, This year marks a decade of the exhibition and this years looks to be the best yet with a number of artists exhibiting from Italy, France, the United States and Germany as well as from across the UK.
The exhibition runs from Sunday 26th June to Sunday 30th October 2011 and features work from past years alongside new pieces.
Normal Botanic Garden opening times are 10am-4pm Monday-Friday all year (except for the Christmas-New Year period) and on Saturday and Sunday from the third weekend in March to the second weekend in November. Admission is normally free except for special Open Days. The entrance to the Garden is in Glebe Road, Oadby, Leicester.

Menphys Open Gardens 2011
Poster design for Menphys Open Gardens 2011,
Designed to promote an open garden event hosted by Her Grace, The Dowager Duchess of Rutland for the Leicester based charity menphys at Belvoir Lodge.
The design incorporates the event information into the middle of a pair of ornate iron garden gates which have been opened to invite the viewer into both the poster & the garden.
The typeface is of a bold style reminiscent of classic movie posters and is fully contained within the rectangular shape of the gate opening making for a design where the text becomes the most prominent feature of the piece.
The poster also continues the theme of Ladybirds and Birds as featured on the previous poster for the oadby and wigston charity show, How many can you spot ?

Turbine - The Low Spinney Wind Farm is a short film about the newly created wind farm situated between the villages of Ashby Magna, Gilmorton and Dunton Bassett, near Lutterworth in Leicestershire.
The wind farm is expected to be fully operational by mid-summer.
Filmed at sunset the silhouettes of the 125m high turbines look strange but also perfectly in tune with their natural surroundings.

A fantastic display of wild Bluebells swaying with the breeze, look striking in the evening sun. found in a small patch of woodland near Fosse Park in Enderby Leicestershire.

I filmed this video in a small wooded area alongside the Osiers Bridge near Fosse Park in Enderby, In the late evening sun the carpet of bluebells looked spectacular as they caught the light coming through the leaves of the trees above.
This hidden area of beauty is a little oasis in the middle of the urban environment that surrounds it on all sides !.

A brief to design a poster for an 80`s themed disco fund-raiser for Leicester charity Menphys.

The poster needed to evoke the themes and style of the 1980`s yet still needed to appear modern when displayed alongside a number of other posters on a noticeboard etc.

The poster design needed to appeal to a target demographic of teens through to adults and fit alongside other posters and literature used by the charity.

The final outcome is a largely text based layout with a striking Red colour scheme (the charity colour) with the main details offset at a 45 degree angle creating a dynamic form that takes its cue mainly from the majority of 1980`s electronics packaging.

The Severn Bore is a tidal bore seen on the tidal reaches of the River Severn in the UK many people come to see the rare sight of a wave travelling upstream against the flow of the river and its is a magnet for surfers and water sports enthusiasts who challenge themselves to ride the potentially 2 metre (7 ft) high wave as it goes by.

I was asked to design a poster for Great Central Railway`s Winter Steam Gala the design needed to fit in with the period settings of the various stations and their collection of classic railway posters but also stand out when displayed away from this environment.
My design (like the classic posters) focuses on text with a photographic image reduced to basic cut out colours relegated to a supporting role
The blues and whites of the poster directly reference the winter time period of the event and the sharp angles the forward dynamism of the train moving directly toward the viewer.

Every Christmas table needs place cards this years place cards designed by me feature each persons name in silver lettering with doodled objects and pattens surrounding each letter in white.
The lettering and doodles are complemented with a duck egg blue background and printed on marble effect card stock.
Each card will be held in a metal holder with a small diamond inset into it.

Taken aboard the oporto tram as it visited Blackpool Rigby Road tram depot open day on the 125 anniversary of the Blackpool tramway.
I shot from a low angle to truly show the amazingly detailed interior of this portuguese tram and applied a high contrast mono filter to give the
image a aproriate aged feel.

Spotlight: Cosby Victory Show - They Dont Like It Up 'Em !

Spotlight: Cosby Victory Show,
Todays spotlight video was filmed at 2007`s victory show in Cosby.
The Victory Show (which was unfortunately cancelled this year) is a two day extravaganza of 1940`s wartime re-enactments.
The event features a battle scene played out in a field with explosives and true to period vehicles putting on a display that wouldnt look out of place in a hollywood action movie !.
My video is in the style of the old cinema newsreels of this period & features action from the battle scene.
Let`s hope this event will return next year bigger and better than ever before !

BNI Car Wash for Menphys
A poster designed by me for the BNI car wash in aid of the Menphys Sketchly Hill nursery taking place in Hinckley ( Leicestershire ) On the 5th September 2010 I used an aqua blue colour scheme to surgest water and soap bubbles inside and behind the lettering which is written in a deliberately simple bold impact typeface.

Sculpture In The Garden features images taken by me during a visit to the annual Sculpture exhibition at the University of Leicester`s Botanical Gardens.
The video is just a taste of the full exhibition which has the theme 'Heart Head and Hands' and features 63 pieces by 42 artists from around the world it is well worth a visit. Personal highlights for me included some bamboo canes with parcel tags tied to them featuring messages from various people and a piece based on connections in the brain.

Spotlight : Mountain Of Legends - The Untersberg

Spotlight : In the second of this regular feature I`m highlighting my video The Untersberg - Mountain Of Legends, I filmed this video as part of my day trip to Salzburg (see my post Salzburg In A Day ).
The mountain straddles the border between Berchtesgaden, Germany and Salzburg, Austria and has a cable car running up to its peak.
On boarding the cable car we were instantly plunged into a complete white-out fearing that the trip had been a waste of time we where thankfully proved very wrong as the clouds parted to reveal a sight unsurpassed in its beauty, words cannot do justice to one of the most moving natural vistas I`ve ever experienced the Alps stretched out before me truly took my breath away (that or the freezing temperatures !), then as if trying to mask their beauty the clouds returned to veil the awesome scene. I did my best to capture the majesty of the area in the video above but nothing truly prepares you for this Legendary mountain its magnificence and I thoroughly recommend a visit.

Southern Mill Fun Day Poster
One from the archives ! this was a poster I designed back in 2008 for the annual funday down at southern mill caravan site in Salcombe Devon where I`ve spent many a memorable holiday !. I used a sketchy style that reflected the rural nature of the area and the fact the event was mainly aimed at children.
The funday itself included a number of traditional 'events' such as duck races and treasure hunts the event was in aid of the Devon air ambulance.

Filmed entirely on an Iphone 3g Timeslice is a time-lapse film in the style of Koyaanisqatsi based in and around my local area, filmed on a bridge over the M1 Motorway in Enderby and at Fosse Park in Leicestershire I took over 100 photos at 5 Minute intervals for 60 Minutes at each location then edited them together to create a film that looks at movement and time passing all around us during our daily lives.

A Fire takes hold of the Eurokey plastics factory in Enderby (Leicestershire) and the emegency services work hard to get it under control. particularly like the way the fireman turn to face the camera at the start I didn`t even shout to them !

Some examples of my design work for a new client of mine, the Leicester charity Menphys, my brief was to design a new image for their annual fundraising walk that could be used across a number of outlets from magazines to shop windows, and easily reproduced in a variety of sizes. my interpretation of the brief (below) centers around the idea of a shoe print and is designed to evoke the outdoor nature of this event the walk takes place on the 9th May 2010 and is open to anyone who wants to take part just follow the instructions on the posters !.

A Short film about a traction engine at The Abbey Road Pumping Station in Leicester, This was filmed during one of the steam days held regularly there. The steam days feature a variety of steam based vehicles and technology from the past and is a fantastic opportunity for photos and is well worth a visit even if your not into steam technology. The Station also has a small steam engine called Lenard who I featured in an earlier video which you can also see below.

Taken on the way to Leicester city v Newcastle united this replica of the statue of liberty stands meters away from it's original vantage point atop the liberty shoes building in Leicester the statue was commisioned after the owners of the factory visited new York and loved it so much they renamed thier shoe company and had this statue placed high on the front of the factory for all to see !.

3D`s everywhere at the moment so I thought I would have a go and convert one of my images to 3d. If you hunt down a pair of those glasses sainsbury`s gave out for channel 4`s 3d week (blue and cyan) the image above will be in full 3d. Its all done with a free program called stereo photo maker (click the title of this post for the download site) it`s really easy to use with great results (see above !) and a Happy New Year to all my readers.

Trying out the 16:9 aspect ratio setting on my camera, it creates a long thin image that I think in this image works quite well.
I`ve also changed the contrast to give a HDR style to the image highlighting the blue of the bridge and making the lettering stand out.

Anyone who has visited the town of Salcombe in devon will tell you without a doubt that Cranch's make the best fudge on the planet !, They have been going since 1869 and specialise in making fantastic fudge flavors from mint choc through rum and rasin, theres enough choice to make mr wonka green with envy !. Recently I received a bag of this amazing fudge for my birthday and after enjoying it's contents I decided to use the distinctive pink striped bag to create a unique desk tidy. The main part is a cardboard tube and base simply glued together and then wraped in the bag,
what do you think ?

Whilst on holiday recently in the Devon town of Salcombe the Fat Face BBQ tour visited south sands beach bringing with them free beer and tomato/basil burgers !.
During the event I met one of thier marketing people and showed her a photo I had taken earlier that day at the sandcastle competition, she asked me to send it to her to use on Fat Face`s online community pages Out There so I did and a few weeks later it was published under the title Salcombe Sandcastle Genius !.

Salzurg In A Day

Day trips don`t usually involve getting on a plane or boarding a cable car 1,972 metres (6,469 feet) to the summit of an alp.

3am and I’ve got a 50 euros in my wallet (travel money) and return tickets on a Ryan Air plane to the Austrian city of Salzburg birthplace of Mozart and known to many as the place where a nun named Maria sang about some lonely goats and hills that where alive with the sound of music, Soon those very same hills (or more correctly mountains) would be towering before me as I stepped from the plane I had boarded at 6am at Stanstead Airport. We collect the hire car from Hertz (nectar points), and set off into town W.A Mozart airport is on the outskirts of the city and although everything in Salzburg is in easy walking distance we had plans to explore the alpine villages surrounding the city.
Once in the city we park the car in a car park (situated inside a mountain!) and climb to the Salzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg). The fortress was used in the Sound of Music and dominates the city skyline. Its state rooms are a must see, completely furnished in gold and with spectacular views over the city and surrounding Alps. We make our way down into the main squares of the city and explore the streets, sights and sounds of Salzburg. We decide to visit the Getreidegasse, a street famous for its wrought iron shop signs and the birthplace of Salzburg’s most famous resident Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart who’s bright yellow house dominates the street and is now a museum dedicated to his work.
We buy a sandwich from the fish bar next door and sit in the small busy square to eat it.
Back in the car we leave Salzburg and head for the Untersberg, A legendary mountain only 16km (10mi) from the city and take a very bumpy cable car to the summit where we are plunged into total whiteness as the clouds obscured any chance of a view. Then as if sensing our disappointment, the clouds parted and words can not do justice to the view before me, I was completely unprepared for the sheer beauty of the Alps light sparkling on mounds of waist high snow and deep blue sky above. Although my camera was virtually frozen to my hands I did my best to capture the awesome scene, before the clouds returned and the scene was gone a fleeting moment captured in my memory and in pixels forever.
The rest of the day was spent exploring the many smaller Alpine villages surrounding the city each with picture postcard houses and later returning to Salzburg to get some evening photos. As the sun fell behind the surrounding mountains we boarded the plane to Stansted and my time in Salzburg came to an end.
At the time of writing Ryan air fly’s regularly between London and Salzburg and as long as you only travel with carry on luggage a return flight can cost as little as £14 .

Lion Dance In Blaby

Just posted a video from last night showing a traditional Chinese New Year Lion dance preformed at the double dragon restaurant in Blaby the dance started with the lighting of a set of very loud firecrackers and then featured a traditional drum beat accompanying two dancers dressed in a chinese lion costume.
(Apology's for the bad video quality I had to film using my mobile phone and enlarge it from a small 3gp file for posting on Youtube.)
